You know the one. “I never have enough money”, “we’ll never pay off our debts”, “everything is so expensive!” or “I’m a hopeless saver”.
These stories are what we tell ourselves on a daily basis, sometimes several times a day, without even realising that we’re doing it. Do you notice them? Have you ever wondered where they even came from? You’ve probably heard one of your parents or someone from your past say those exact words, so why do we continue the negative pattern when it may not even be relevant to our own lives?
We’ve been listening to that little voice in our heads for so long that we never even question it anymore. But what if we did? We can choose to stay on autopilot and let life just happen to us, or we can pay more attention and create the life that we really want.
So how do we do it? How do we change our story? Because that’s all it is, a story that we tell ourselves. And if it is just a story, why don’t we create an awesome one about how we really want to live our life!
The first step is awareness. We can’t change something if we don’t know what we want to change.
Pay more attention to what that little voice in your head is telling you when you’re buying groceries, or thinking about a holiday, or even paying the bills. Write it down. Take a mental note. You might be surprised by what you hear!
The next step is to re-frame the negative thoughts as soon as you can.
If you’ve said to yourself, “I can’t afford that”, change it to “I have other priorities right now”. Or if it’s “We never have enough money”, change it to “we are on our way to financial freedom”. If you find yourself claiming “I’m no good with money”, re-frame it to “I am a money magnet. Money is attracted to me!” Keep repeating the positive thoughts whenever you’re in those situations or as often as you think of them.
Lastly, and most importantly, be grateful for where you’re at right now.
Change your focus from what you don’t have, to what you do have. We can get into a habit of complaining about so much of our lives but I can guarantee you that there is someone, somewhere, right now, who wishes that they were lucky enough to be in the exact situation that you’re in today. So, take the time to find gratitude and joy in everything that you already have.
Remember, you can change your story and invite money into your life. You really can make it whatever you want.
So… what’s your money story?
